On 19 October 2022, a ceremony was held at the official residence of Ambassador Masaki to confer the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun on Mr. Donald Tusk, former President of the European Council and former Prime Minister of Poland.

During his tenure as President of the European Council from 2014 to 2019, Mr Tusk contributed greatly to the development and deepening of Japan-EU relations, including the conclusion, signing and entry into force of the Japan-EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) and the Japan-EU Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA). In addition, Mr Tusk helped to enhance Japan-Poland bilateral relations during his time as Prime Minister of Poland. In recognition of these significant contributions, Mr Tusk was awarded the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun in the 2021 Spring Conference of Decoration on Foreign Nationals.

At the ceremony, Ambassador Masaki presented the rosette medal and the Order of the Decoration to former President Tusk. In his congratulatory address, Ambassador Masaki highlighted how Mr Tusk visited the Atomic-bombed cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the occasion of the G20 Osaka Summit in 2019 for the first time as the President of the European Council. There, Mr Tusk called on the world’s heads of state and government to visit the Atomic-bombed cities to deepen their understanding. Ambassador Masaki also thanked Mr Tusk for his efforts to strengthen the political and economic ties between Japan and Poland and the V4 countries.

In his acceptance speech, former President Tusk expressed his condolences on the passing of former Prime Minister Abe, with whom he had fostered a close friendship for many years, and said that Japan and the EU were partners with shared values that have been cooperating ever more closely during crises such as the situation in Ukraine and the pandemic. He expressed his sincere gratitude to the Government of Japan for the decoration.
