Conferment of a Decoration upon Mr. Reinhard Bütikofer, former Member of the European Parliament (2009-2024)

On Wednesday 28th January 2026, a ceremony was held at the Official Residence of the Ambassador of Japan to the European Union to confer the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon on Mr. Reinhard Bütikofer, former Member of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2024.

Mr. Bütikofer played a central role in European political debate and international engagement, serving as Co-Chair of the European Green Party from 2012 to 2019.

Throughout his career, he made outstanding contributions to Japan–EU relations, including supporting Japan’s recovery after the Great East Japan Earthquake and helping to lift EU import restrictions on Japanese food products in August 2023. 

He also contributed to strengthening the foundations of Japan–EU relations, notably through the 2023 European Parliament Report on Japan–EU Relations, the first comprehensive report adopted by the Parliament, which he drafted and led to adoption.

In his conferment speech, Ambassador Aikawa described Mr. Bütikofer as a trusted interlocutor, a principled parliamentarian, and a tireless advocate for dialogue grounded in facts and shared values. 

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Bütikofer emphasized that like-mindedness is not a privilege but a responsibility, praising Japan’s solidarity with Europe and emphasizing the importance of trusted strategic partnerships.
