Science Roundtable Talk with Dr. KOTANI Motoko, Science and Technology Co-Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and European R&I policy officials

On 1 July 2022, the Mission of Japan to the European Union hosted a Science Roundtable Talk between Dr. KOTANI Motoko, Science and Technology Co-Adviser to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and officials from the European Commission’s DG-RTD, Delegations from EU Member States, and Liaison Offices of science and technology institutions.
In his opening remarks, Deputy Chief of Mission, Ambassador Fujiwara referred to the significance of science and technology diplomacy and the changing role of S&T in the context of global challenges facing the world. During the talk session, Dr. Kotani outlined the current status of Japan's science, technology and innovation policy and S&T diplomacy efforts. This was followed by supplementary comments on the EU's R&I international strategy by the European Commission and the Permanent Representation of France to the EU. In the Q&A and discussion session, Dr. Kotani answered questions from and exchanged views with participants.
During the roundtable, active Q&A and discussions were held on topics such as Japan’s science attaché system, Japan’s possible association to the Horizon Europe, and relations between diplomacy and international S&T cooperation. Participants shared policy agendas relevant to Japan and Europe and confirmed the importance of S&T cooperation networks.
Eighteen participants took part in the roundtable including Dr. Kotani, officials from the European Commission, Representations to the EU and R&I Liaison Offices of Nine European countries, in addition to Japanese officials (the Mission of Japan to the EU and the Director of RIKEN's Europe Office).
