The Conferment Ceremony of the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star on Prof. Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, former President of the European Research Council

On 21 June 2022, the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star was conferred on Professor Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, former President of the European Research Council and former Director of the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques, at the residence of the Ambassador of Japan to France.

During his tenure as President of the European Research Council (ERC) from 2014 to 2019, Professor Bourguignon made a significant contribution to laying the foundation for science and technology exchange between Japan and the EU. His contribution included leading the establishment of a framework for the promotion of the exchange of researchers between the ERC and three major Japanese public research fund support organisations - the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED). For his longstanding contributions to the promotion of scientific exchanges and the strengthening of relations between Japan and Europe, he was conferred the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star at the 2022 Spring Conferment of Decorations on Foreign Nationals.

The conferment ceremony took place in France, where Professor Bourguignon resides, and was organised by the Embassy of Japan in France. During the ceremony, the Japanese Ambassador to France, Mr. Ihara, conferred the decoration on Professor Bourguignon. In his congratulatory address, he introduced Professor Bourguignon's achievements, expressed his gratitude and congratulated him on his decoration.

In his reply after receiving the decoration, Professor Bourguignon expressed his gratitude to relevant the people in Europe, Japan and France, and referred to the importance of EU-Japan science and technology relations. He also spoke about his efforts to promote personal exchanges with Japan over the past 40 years, and his connections with many renowned Japanese researchers.
