The Conferment Ceremony of the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun on Mr. Jean-Claude Juncker, former President of the European Commission

On July 15, the Conferment Ceremony of the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun on Mr. Jean-Claude Juncker, former President of the European Commission and former Prime Minister of Luxembourg was held at Ambassador Masaki's residence.
During his tenure as President of the European Commission from 2014 to 2019, former President Junker contributed to the deepening of the Japan-EU relationship. He concluded the Japan-EU EPA (Economic Partnership Agreement) , the Japan-EU SPA (Strategic Partnership Agreement) , and “The Partnership on Sustainable Connectivity and Quality Infrastructure Between Japan and the European Union” (English (PDF)) .
On the occasion of the 2020 Autumn Conferment of Decorations on Foreign Nationals, former President Juncker was awarded the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun in recognition for his contribution to strengthening the Japan-EU relations.
This ceremony was modest, as a result of the COVID-19 control measures that were taken. At the ceremony, Ambassador Masaki conferred the decoration on former President Junker. Ambassador Masaki recalled the achievements of the former President, expressed his gratitude and congratulated the President on receiving the award. Ambassador Masaki also read out a congratulatory message from Abe Shinzo, former Prime Minister of Japan, who established a personal relationship of trust and friendship with the former President and strengthened the EU-Japan relationship during his tenure.
In his remarks, former President Juncker praised the importance of the relationship between Japan and the EU and between Japan and Luxembourg. He expressed gratitude for the award, and thanked his team and collaborators for working with him on strengthening Japan-EU relations.
