Address by Prime Minister SUGA at the “Climate Ambition Summit”

On December 12, 2020, Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide delivered a video message at the Climate Ambition Summit held to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the adoption of the Paris Agreement.
In his speech, he reiterated Japan’s new policy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050, and announced that a new reduction target for 2030, in line with the 2050 target, will be submitted to the United Nations by COP26, which is scheduled for November next year.
On that basis, PM Suga also stated his determination to "take a leadership role to realize a decarbonized society" and announced Japan’s participation in the Climate Ambition Alliance formed at COP25 in 2019.
