Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
of Japan to the European Union

MASAKI Yasushi

My name is Yasushi MASAKI, and I have been appointed to serve as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary at the Mission of Japan to the European Union.

I have visited Brussels several times on business trips, but this is my first time being appointed here. As soon as I arrived last weekend, I was greeted by the typical Brussels weather: four seasons in a day. I am looking forward to getting used to and enjoying the local life as soon as possible.

Today, Europe, like Japan, is facing a number of challenges including the COVID-19 crisis, and is entering a turbulent era. Under such circumstances, and under the leadership of the President of the European Council Charles Michel and the President of the European Commission Ursula Von Der Leyen, the EU deepens "solidarity" and "unity" and plays a leading role in solving global issues around the world. I think this is the EU’s role today.

The international order that emerged at the end of the Second World War and has supported the world peace and stability for a long time is now disturbed. Japan and the EU have greatly benefited from this international order. This is why Japan and the EU, who share common values, will lead the world and work closely together to address the challenges facing the international community. This is what we need the most right now. The Japan-EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), which came into effect in February 2019, and the Japan-EU Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA) which began provisional application on the same day, are solid foundations for developing Japan-EU relations.

As an ambassador, I would like to do my best to further strengthen the relationship between Japan and the EU, while contributing to the peace and prosperity of the wider international community.

I appreciate your cooperation and support.

Thank you.
