Extension of H.E. Mr. Van Rompuy’s term as “Haiku Ambassador for Japan-EU Friendship”

On 27 August, Ambassador Kodama visited H.E. Mr. Herman Van Rompuy, former President of the European Council, and presented him with the certificate of appointment by Foreign Minister of Japan, Mr. Taro Kono for “Haiku Ambassador for Japan-EU Friendship” (effective from 02 June for two years).

President Van Rompuy, a haiku lover, has been contributing to the promotion of the understanding of Japanese culture through haiku, thereby strengthening the relationship between Japan and Europe. President Van Rompuy was appointed Haiku Ambassador by Foreign Minister of Japan, Mr. Fumio Kishida in May 2015 and June 2017. The decision to extend President Van Rompuy’s tenure as Haiku Ambassador for a second two-year term was driven by his achievements as well as the desire to ensure President Van Rompuy’s continued cooperation in this area.
