On 24 October, Ambassador Kodama was invited to the "Smart Cities, Secure Societies: Breakthroughs in EU and Japan Research Cooperation" symposium organised by Kobe University and Vrije Universiteit Brussel, where he gave an opening speech. The conference was attended by about 100 people including Japanese and European researchers in the fields of disaster prevention and security, as well as European Commission representatives (DG RTD, DG EAC). The participants discussed possible Japan-EU research cooperation in the smart cities and secure societies sectors, which is a shared objective of Japan and Europe.
