Extension of H.E. Mr Van Rompuy’s term as “Haiku Ambassador for Japan-EU Friendship”

On 09 June, Ambassador Kodama visited H.E. Mr. Herman Van Rompuy, the former President of the European Council, and presented him with the certificate of “Haiku Ambassador for Japan-EU Friendship” (effective from 02 June for 2 years).

President Van Rompuy, a haiku lover, has been contributing to the promotion of the understanding of Japanese culture through haiku and thereby strengthening the Japan-Europe relationship. President Van Rompuy was first appointed Haiku Ambassador by Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida in May 2015. The decision to extend President Van Rompuy’s tenure as Haiku Ambassador for a second 2-year term was motivated by his achievements as well as the desire to ensure President Van Rompuy’s continued cooperation in this area.
