The 27th Energy Charter Conference in Tokyo
From 25-26 November 2016 the “27th Energy Charter Conference” was held in Tokyo under the Chairmanship of Japan, in cooperation with the Energy Charter Secretariat. Participants in the conference came from 69 different countries and regions, and included 32 participants on ministerial level. 9 different international institutions were represented among the participants. In total, over 400 people participated in the 2 day conference.
Following a meeting on the morning of the 25th, a ministerial meeting was held on the 26th.
Mr. Kentaro Sonoura, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, gave the welcoming remarks and also acted as chair and moderator of the conference.
A Ministerial lunch was also organized by State Minister Sonoura. At the ministerial meeting, an active discussion was carried on how the Energy Charter process can contribute to the main challenges of the global energy situation, such as climate change and sustainable development. A final statement “Tokyo Declaration on the Energy Charter” was issued as a result of the discussion.
In the morning of the 25th, Ambassador Kodama acted as chair of the statutory session. In addition to that, in the afternoon of the 26th, Ambassador Kodama acted as chair of the Ministerial session 2 and closing session.
